This What’s Good marks the final full week of school as well as my final What’s Good for Families. The name, What’s Good in the Neighborhood, was coined by Jerred Anderson in a staff meeting early in 2017, during my first year at CNH. The staff was brainstorming possible names for rebranding what was then called the “Salmon Pages,” and Jerred offhandedly said, “How about What’s Good in the Neighborhood?” The team of teachers erupted in agreement, enjoying the playfulness and specificity of the name. That was one of many moments during my first year at CNH when I realized I was in the right place with the right people.

The last five years have been a wild and wonderful ride.  It has been such a pleasure and an honor to serve this community. The staff is unbelievably dedicated, the families are remarkably engaged, and the students are hilarious and super wonderful.  As I write this final What’s Good message, memories are flooding into my mind.  I laugh at the memory of Mr. Dietzen dancing to “Can’t Touch This” at an Open Mic All-School. I feel sentimental remembering our first Family Arts Night where students taught the adults and truly demonstrated the amazing arts programming offered at the school. My heart skips a beat remembering the fear of a lockdown in the building early on in my tenure. And COVID has been its own rollercoaster of fear, protection, deliveries to houses, virtual learning, quarantining, and amazing support from and being in community with families. I brim with pride remembering Book Launch parties, the Go Green Museum, Buddy Days, marching with families in Annapolis, visits from alumni telling us how well they’re doing in high school, and countless Data meetings with teachers pouring over disaggregated data and brainstorming teaching strategies to better serve our students. Most of all, I cherish the laughter – what a beautiful and happy place to be!

As I step into some new projects, both local as well as international, and am also able to focus more fully on my wonderful three-year-old daughter, I will be held up by all that I have learned in the past five years at CNH.  I love this school and am excited for the new directions the school will go with the support of Jabari Bush as the next principal.

With love and gratitude,

–Shyla.
