50 Golden Days
This Wednesday marks the 50th day of the school year. 50 times shaking hands at the door in the morning. 50 days of Math instruction and Literacy Centers. 50 recesses. 50 lunches. 50 evenings preparing for school the next day. In marriage, the 50th anniversary is the Golden Anniversary. I like to think of this time of year as the golden period. We are deep into instruction, well developed with relationships, out in the world doing fieldwork — everything is moving along smoothly. Next week, our Family Arts Night marks the culmination of our golden work so far this school year. Students teach their families, outside artists work to support them. What a beautiful time of year!
Warmly,
~Shyla

Student Voice Association Elections: The Results are In!
We are excited to announce that the Student Voice Association (SVA) elections took place last Friday and the results are in!
- Co-Facilitators: Collects ideas from students and facilitates meetings: Sam Anderson and Malaika Ross-Jones
- Co-Promoters: Gets support from Board, faculty, and community with new initiatives. This position also serves as the student representative on the CNH Board and will attend Board meetings the second Tuesday of every month, 6:00-7:30: Sukanya Stoute and Damien Davis
Organizer: Leads the students in making new initiatives happen: Payton Spruell
- Members-at-Large: Supports The Core in collecting student opinion and enacting initiatives:
Sophia Van Hook and Caleb McGuire
It was a tight race that required a recount. As I said to the candidates over donuts Monday morning, it takes leadership simply to run — to be able to identify that there are things that need to be changed, and to know that you are someone who could help lead that change.
For those who ran and were not elected into a position, they are invited to serve on the Members-at-Large Committee, led by Sophia Van Hook and Caleb McGuire. There will also be other committee work where we will need their leadership as the SVA develops its initiatives for the year.

Thanksgiving Food Drive
Mr. Smith’s 6th grade advisory is holding its annual food drive. It begins Monday, October 28 and ends Friday, November 15. Any items not used for the Thanksgiving baskets will be donated to a local food pantry or shelter.
All non-perishable food items are welcome. Please do not send anything that is expired or that needs to be frozen or refrigerated.
In order to make Thanksgiving baskets, we are requesting the following items be brought in by each grade:
K, 3rd, 6th: stuffing and canned vegetables (green beans, corn, carrots),
1st, 4th, 7th: boxed potatoes regular or sweet, canned fruit (cranberries/apple sauce) and treats/snacks (fruit snacks, pretzels, cookies)
2nd, 5th, 8th: gravy, soup, and noodles or rice (mac and cheese)
In order to purchase a turkey for each sponsored family, we will also be collecting money. Each dollar will equal 2 items from your homeroom/grade level! All donated items should be given to homeroom teachers, or advisors—they will be collected by Mr. Smith’s advisory daily.
As always, we will still hold a pancake and turkey sausage breakfast for the grade level that brings in the most items.
Thank you!
